8 to-dosFrequently asked questions
What are the essentials for a day hike?
Proper footwear and socks, water (about half a litre per hour of walking), food, sun protection, a map or GPS with the route downloaded, a first aid kit, a warm layer and a rain layer, and a charged phone. Add a headlamp if there is any chance of finishing after dark.
How much water should I carry hiking?
A common rule is half a litre per hour of moderate hiking in mild weather, and up to a litre per hour in heat or at altitude. A water bottle or a hydration bladder both work; a filter lets you refill from streams on longer routes.
What should I wear for hiking?
Layers you can add or remove: a wicking t-shirt, a warm mid layer such as a fleece or hoodie, and a rain jacket. Avoid cotton on long or wet hikes. Hiking shoes or boots with proper hiking socks prevent most blisters.
Can I share this list with my hiking group?
Yes. Open the list in The Packing List app and share it with a link. Everyone in the group can tick off what they're bringing from their browser, and you see it live on your phone.
